The distinction matters because the current generation of agent products conflates two different kinds of continuity. One is continuity of "state": an agent's credentials, its accumulated knowledge of how a principal likes work done, its relationships to the tools and other agents it coordinates with, and the precise checkpoint of any workflow it has not finished. The other is continuity of "compute": whether the machine executing that agent is left running between tasks. Vendors selling always-on teammates market the second because it is the easier story to tell — a machine that never sleeps is legible in a way that a durable store is not. But only the first is load-bearing. An agent whose compute persists but whose state does not is a fast agent with amnesia. An agent whose state persists but whose compute does not is exactly the target architecture: continuity without cost.

Application

Persistent State is what a durable store holds when an agent is dormant or a workflow is paused: identity and credentials, permissions and role, episodic and semantic memory, learned routines, relationships to tools and other agents, and the exact checkpoint of any unfinished work. It is written at every state transition, not only at shutdown, so that an agent resuming after an arbitrary pause reconstructs its full operational context rather than a partial one. Persistent State is deliberately narrower than 'everything the agent knows': Context Architecture governs how the knowledge layers within it are stored and versioned, and Agent Record captures a point-in-time profile of scope and permissions. Persistent State is the requirement that both survive continuously, together with live memory and in-flight work, rather than being reconstructed from scratch at each invocation.

Context

The current wave of always-on agent products sells continuity by keeping compute running, because a machine that never stops is the simplest possible way to make persistence legible to a buyer. But continuity of state and continuity of compute are separable, and only one of them is architecturally necessary. Persistent State names the half that must survive: without it, an agent that resumes after a pause has no way to know what it already decided, what it already tried, or what a human already told it — and every resumption degrades into a cold start wearing a familiar name. Persistent State is the precondition that makes Event-Triggered Activation and Suspend/Resume Architecture safe to build on. Neither pattern is a discipline of forgetting; both are disciplines of remembering without paying to stay awake.
