Humans remain responsible for ensuring the system works. The result is a more efficient version of the same architecture. Costs decrease at the margin, but the relationship between complexity and headcount does not change. The Coordination Tax is reduced at the task level. It is not eliminated at the structural level.
The limits of automation
When a company automates, it solves for a specific bottleneck. A language model drafts client communications. A script moves data between systems. A workflow tool routes approvals faster. Each of these actions reduces the effort of a single task without reducing the coordination overhead that connects those tasks. The Coordination Tax — the cumulative cost of alignment, approvals, and manual oversight required to keep the firm functioning — persists at the structural level because the architecture that generates it has not changed.
